How to choose a trustworthy local builder in Leeds
Hiring someone to work on your home is a big decision. Whether you're planning a new bathroom, tidying up the garden and driveway, or taking on a full house extension, the builder you choose makes all the difference. Here at CLM Projects, we're a Leeds-based team and we know how nerve-wracking it can be to hand over your home to someone new. So here's our honest guide to picking the right people for the job.
Start local
There's real value in hiring a builder who's based near you. A local team is easier to meet face to face, quicker to get to your property, and far more likely to care about their reputation in the area. When you search for something like "builder near me" or "bathroom fitters in Leeds", look for a company that clearly works in your neighbourhood and can point to jobs they've done nearby.
Look at real, recent work
Anyone can talk a good game, but the work speaks louder. Ask to see photos of recent projects — ideally ones similar to yours. If you're after an extension, don't settle for bathroom photos alone. A good builder will happily show you what they've finished and, where possible, put you in touch with past customers. Seeing a job in person is even better if it can be arranged.
Read the reviews
Online reviews are one of the best tools you have. Check the company's Google Business Profile and social media pages. You're looking for a steady stream of genuine, recent reviews rather than a handful from years ago. Pay attention to how the business responds to feedback too — a team that replies politely and sorts out any issues is one you can trust.
Get a clear, written quote
A proper quote should break down what's included so there are no nasty surprises later. Be wary of prices that seem too good to be true, and equally of vague estimates scribbled on the back of an envelope. A trustworthy builder will take the time to understand exactly what you want before putting a figure to it, and they'll be upfront about anything that might change along the way.
Ask about timescales and communication
Good work takes time, but you deserve to know roughly how long the job will take and what happens if the weather or supplies cause a delay. More importantly, you want someone who keeps you in the loop. The best builders turn up when they say they will, tell you what's happening each week, and leave the site tidy at the end of the day.
Trust your gut
After all the checks, listen to how you feel. Did they listen to what you wanted? Were they honest about what's realistic for your budget? Did they treat your home with respect on the first visit? A builder who's straight with you from the start is far more likely to be straight with you throughout.
