Getting the ground right matters more than the surface
Most driveway and patio failures in Leeds are not surface failures. They are sub-base failures. A block-paved drive laid on a shallow or poorly compacted base will look right for a season, then start rutting where the car wheels sit and dipping near the gully. Redoing it later costs more than building it properly the first time, because the blocks have to come up regardless.
We dig out to the depth the site actually needs, lay and compact a proper MOT Type 1 base, and set the levels so water runs where it should rather than towards your house. On a sloping Leeds garden that often means a retaining element or a change in level that was not in the original brief. We would rather raise that at quote stage than discover it halfway through.
Drainage is a planning issue, not just a practical one
Front gardens are a common surprise. If you are laying more than five square metres of new impermeable surface at the front of a house and the water will run off onto the road, that generally needs planning permission. Use a permeable surface, or direct the run-off to a soakaway or a border within your own boundary, and it usually does not.
This is one of the most common things homeowners are not told before work starts. We design driveways around it from the outset, which is normally a matter of specification and falls rather than extra cost.
What actually drives the price
Access, ground conditions and levels, in that order. A rear garden reachable only through the house is a different job to one with side access wide enough for a barrow run or a mini digger. Clay that holds water needs a deeper build-up. A garden that drops a metre across its length needs retaining before it needs paving.
Materials matter too, but less than people expect. The gap between a mid-range block and a premium one is smaller than the gap between a properly excavated base and a shallow one. We quote the base honestly and let you choose the surface.

How long does a driveway take?
A straightforward domestic block-paved driveway is usually a week or so on site, depending on size, access and how much excavation is needed. Larger projects or ones needing retaining work take longer. We give you a realistic window at quote stage rather than an optimistic one.
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
Often not, but it depends on drainage. Laying over five square metres of impermeable surface at the front of a house that drains onto the road generally does need permission. A permeable surface, or run-off directed to a soakaway or border inside your boundary, generally does not. We plan for this before we quote.
Can you work on a sloping garden?
Yes, and a lot of Leeds gardens slope more than people realise. It usually means levelling, retaining or stepping the space rather than forcing a flat design onto ground that will not take it. We survey the levels first and tell you what the plot actually needs.
What is the difference between block paving, resin and porcelain?
Block paving is hard-wearing and individual blocks can be lifted and replaced. Resin-bound gives a seamless finish and is permeable when laid on the right base. Porcelain is dimensionally consistent with a very clean look and suits contemporary patios. All three need the same quality of preparation underneath.
Do you clear away the old surface?
Yes. Excavation, muck-away and disposal are part of the job and are included in the quote, so there is no separate skip bill landing afterwards.
