Is all damp the same problem?
No, and that's usually where damp treatment goes wrong. Rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation have completely different causes and completely different fixes — treating condensation like rising damp, for example, achieves nothing. We diagnose which one you actually have before recommending anything.
Do you do damp-proof course work yourselves?
We assess it honestly first — a lot of what looks like rising damp is actually penetrating damp or a bridged damp course from ground levels built up too high, both of which we fix directly. Where it's genuine rising damp needing a new chemical damp-proof course with an insurance-backed guarantee, we bring in a certified specialist and manage their work as part of the project.
Why would I need a certified specialist rather than just you?
Mainly for the guarantee. An insurance-backed guarantee on a damp-proof course has to come from a certified surveyor — we're honest about that rather than claiming a certification we don't hold. What we do is bring the right person in and stay in charge of the project, so you're not left finding and managing a specialist yourself.
What's the most common cause of damp in Leeds homes?
On older terraces it's often penetrating damp — failed pointing, a blocked or overflowing gutter, or a ground level outside that's been built up above the damp-proof course over the years. Condensation from poor ventilation is also very common in well-sealed, well-insulated modern homes. True rising damp is less common than people assume.
Will you just re-plaster over it?
Not without dealing with the cause first. Re-plastering over an unresolved damp problem just means it reappears, usually within a year or two. We fix or arrange the fix for what's causing it, then re-plaster with the right breathable materials.
