When people plan a garden makeover in Leeds, they usually picture the finished paving, the neat lawn or the smart retaining wall holding back a raised bed. What they rarely think about is the groundwork underneath, and that is exactly where a job is won or lost. At CLM Projects, most of the work that keeps a garden standing straight for years is the part you never see once we have finished.
Across the sloping gardens common in Leeds and the wider West Yorkshire area, retaining walls do a serious structural job. They hold back tonnes of soil, and if they are not built properly they lean, crack and eventually fail. A good retaining wall starts with a proper concrete footing, dug to the right depth for the load it carries. The blockwork is laid level and bonded correctly, and coping stones or granite copings are added on top to shed water and give a clean finish. The copings are not just for looks. They stop rain soaking down into the wall and freezing over winter, which is one of the most common reasons older walls crumble.
The other half of the story is drainage, and it is the part that catches a lot of homeowners out. If you build a retaining wall or lay a large area of paving without thinking about where the water goes, you create a problem for yourself. Water sits behind the wall, builds pressure and pushes it forward. Or it runs across your new patio and pools against the house. Building Regulations also expect surface water to be managed properly, not simply sent into the drains without thought.
That is why we install linear channel drains along garden borders and at the base of paved areas where the levels call for it. A channel drain sits flush with the surface, collects water along its whole length and carries it away to a soakaway or a suitable outfall. Behind retaining walls we lay a gravel sub-base and, where needed, drainage so the water has somewhere to go rather than sitting against the blockwork. It is unglamorous work, but it is the difference between a garden that still looks good in ten years and one that needs redoing.
Block paving follows the same logic. A solid job means excavating to the right depth, laying and compacting a proper sub-base, then a sand bedding layer before the blocks go down. Skimp on the sub-base and the paving sinks and rocks within a couple of seasons. Get the falls right and rainwater runs to the drainage rather than towards your back door. When those foundations are done properly, the finished surface takes daily use, cars and Yorkshire weather without complaint.
One practical tip for anyone planning garden works around Leeds: ask any contractor to explain how they are handling water before you talk about the finish. If they can walk you through the sub-base, the falls and where surface water will end up, that tells you they build things to last. If the conversation is only about how the paving will look, be cautious.
