Block paving is one of the most popular ways to transform a driveway or garden in Leeds — it looks sharp, wears well and, laid properly, lasts for decades. The first question almost everyone asks is a fair one: how much does it actually cost? The honest answer is that it depends, but that doesn't mean you can't get a clear picture before you pick up the phone. This guide walks through the realistic price ranges we see across Leeds and West Yorkshire in 2026, and — just as importantly — explains what pushes the figure up or down so you can judge a quote for yourself.
Indicative block paving costs in Leeds
What a block paving driveway costs in Leeds comes down to five things, and not one of them is visible from a photo.
What is already there. Lifting old concrete is a different job from lifting flags, and both are different again from a gravel drive that has sunk into the ground over twenty years.
The ground underneath. There is a lot of clay around Leeds. Ground that holds water needs a deeper, better-drained build-up than ground that drains on its own, and you only find out which you have got once something comes up.
Whether it is a path, a garden or a driveway. The build-up under a car is not the build-up under a footpath. The same square metre costs a different amount depending on what is going to drive over it.
Where the water goes. A new front driveway has to deal with its own surface water rather than pushing it onto the road. If there is nowhere obvious for it to go, that means a permeable build-up or a soakaway, and that is a real part of the job rather than an extra.
Access. A drive you can back a grab lorry onto is cheaper than one where every barrow of muck goes down a side alley by hand.

What affects the price?
Several factors move a block paving quote, and the biggest ones are usually hidden below the surface:
- Groundworks and the base — a driveway that carries cars needs a deep, properly compacted sub-base. This is the single biggest determinant of how long the paving lasts, and it's where corners get cut on cheap jobs.
- The blocks themselves — budget concrete blocks sit at the lower end; premium clay and textured pavers cost more but hold their colour and character far longer.
- Size and shape — larger areas can be more efficient per m², but curves, borders, edging and complex laying patterns add labour.
- Access and the existing surface — removing and disposing of an old driveway, dealing with tight access, or working around slopes and levels all add time.
- Drainage — how water is managed on and around the paving, which brings us to an important point for new and replacement driveways.
Permeable paving and SuDS — don't overlook it
In England, if you're paving over five square metres of front garden with a traditional impermeable surface that drains onto the road, you may need planning permission. You can usually avoid that by using a permeable (porous) surface, or by directing water to a lawn or border so it drains within your own boundary — part of what's known as Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). Permeable block paving uses a special sub-base and jointing that lets rainwater soak away naturally, which is better for flooding and often the simpler route to compliance. Rules can change and every property is different, so it's always worth confirming the current requirements for your specific driveway before work begins.
Why the cheapest quote usually costs more
It's tempting to take the lowest number, but with paving the price you pay up front and the price you pay over ten years are two different things. A quote that looks cheap has to save money somewhere — usually on the sub-base depth, the compaction, the edge restraints or the quality of the blocks. The result can be paving that sinks, ruts under car tyres, weeds through the joints or shifts at the edges within a couple of winters. Putting that right often means lifting and re-laying — paying twice for one driveway.
A fair, detailed quote should tell you what you're actually getting: the depth and type of sub-base, the blocks specified, how the edges are restrained and how drainage is handled. If a quote is vague on those points, that's worth questioning.
