A freshly rendered wall can change how the whole front of a house looks, but the finish only lasts if the preparation underneath is done properly. Why the scratch coat comes first
On a recent driveway extension over in LS17, we had to take out an old wall and build a new section to tie the two areas together. Before any finishing coat goes on, the blockwork gets a scratch coat. This is a base layer that is keyed, or scored, so the top coat has something to grip. Skip this step, or rush it, and you get render that cracks or blows off the wall within a couple of winters. A proper scratch coat needs time to cure before anything else touches it, which is why good rendering cannot be forced into a single afternoon.
Old walls and new walls rarely match
When you extend a driveway or a boundary, you often end up joining fresh blockwork to something that has been standing for decades. The old and new sections settle at different rates and pull moisture differently. We deal with this by making sure the new brickwork or blockwork is tied in correctly and by rendering across the join once everything is stable. Done well, you should not be able to spot where the old wall ended and the new one began.
Render and drainage go hand in hand
Most render problems in Leeds come down to water. A dark drainpipe running down a freshly painted wall is not just tidy, it keeps rainwater off the render and away from the base. If water is allowed to sit at the foot of a wall, it wicks up and eventually shows through as staining or crumbling. We look at where the water goes before we finish a wall, not after. That means checking gutters, downpipes and the ground level around the base.
Painting the finish
Once the render has cured, a masonry paint or coloured render seals the surface and sets the look. White uPVC doors, clean steps and crisp render together make a real difference to kerb appeal, which matters if you are thinking about selling or simply want the front of the house to look cared for. We would rather let render dry out fully than paint it too soon and trap moisture behind the coat.
